It was a special evening in November 2020 at the Alte Feuerwache Mannheim. On stage was a trio never heard together before, put together by Ludwigshafen drummer Erwin Ditzner.
For years, he has had the privilege of putting together unique bands for a concert evening as part of the Enjoy Jazz Festival. Festival director Rainer Kern gave the Ludwigshafen native a free hand, saying of him, “For me, Erwin Ditzner is one of the most important artists in Germany and he is an incredible drummer who plays and interprets the drums in a way that I know of no other.”
Rainer Kern had suggested Luc Ex, the Dutch bass guitarist, as a suitable partner, and he brought the experimental Finnish guitarist Mikael Szafirowski into play as the third man. On stage, it was an explosive mixture that, not least, audibly played against the frustration of the Corona year. In fact, Carte Blanche was the early finale of the festival year, after which the Enjoy Jazz Festival had to be canceled.
The Rheinpfalz newspaper wrote about the concert: “(a) heated conversation of broken rhythms, tattered guitar chords, accident-prone bass figures, all caked together with high energy.”
